The Mayor of Blackpool, John Bickerstaffe, attended the Great Paris Exhibition in 1889 and was so impressed by the structure that he commissioned The Blackpool Tower to be built upon his return. There was an invitation sent to Monsieur Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), the creator of the Eiffel Tower, to oversee the construction of the Blackpool Tower, although this invitation was declined.The creation of the Tower had several financial difficulties and yet in spite of this, the building commenced with steel being brought in from Manchester. It was inspired by the Eiffel Tower and opened to the public on 14th of May, 1894. It allowed for people of all classes to mix with one another, through music and dancing, as they enjoyed themselves and it has remained a key aspect of the Tower today. Sat between the four legs is the Tower Circus, complete with a circus ring that can be lowered into a 42,000-gallon pool to allow for flamboyant finales, as well as plush interiors by Frank Matcham, a theatre designer famed for his work on the Matcham also turned his hand to the Rococo-style Tower Ballroom, setting baroque paintings inside gold rocaille panels and inscribing a quote from Shakespeare’s poem Venus and Adonis above the stage: “Bid me discourse, I will enchant thine ear”. Steel and Iron in the Victorian period had become a much cheaper alternative to masonry and this affordable material allowed for the Tower to be constructed with less financial strain.Finally, the construction was complete and the Blackpool Tower was officially opened on the 14th May 1894.
